MSTP Student Organization
An organization of MSTP students was chartered by UW-Madison in late 2004. Planning of the organization began with discussions at the 2004 retreat; was strongly supported in a review of the MSTP conducted by Gail Robertson, PhD, Associate Professor of Physiology, and John Nilson, PhD, Professor and Director, School of Molecular Biosciences, Washington State University; and was influenced by the results of a student-initiated questionnaire about the strengths and weaknesses of our program. The student organization has been designed to address issues that arose during the period of analysis and other anticipated issues and includes an executive committee and six standing committees. We anticipate that the organizational structure will allow students to have the same major impact on the program that students acting on their own had when we were fewer in number.
Executive Committee
The goals of the Executive Committee are to centralize and organize the efforts of individual students and act as representatives of all MSTP students during interactions with the administrations of the MSTP, Medical School, and Graduate School. The committee is composed of two elected co-presidents and elected chairs of the standing committees. It meets monthly with a MSTP director and Mr. Cook in attendance. Meetings are announced and open to all students.
Advising and Mentoring Committee
The goal of this committee is to improve the emotional and professional support for students, especially during critical transitions in the program. This goal will be accomplished through advisory relationships with the directors, instruction in mentorship, peer-to-peer mentorship (“big sib” program), advocacy, and networking.
Communications Committee
This committee facilitates communication about program issues, events, and needs among students. It also improves accessibility to resources important to MSTP students. Forums for communication include a fortnightly e-newsletter, the program webpage, student guides to the MSTP and graduate programs, and a MSTP resource book library that is maintained in the administrator’s office.
Curriculum Committee
This committee solicits ideas for curricular improvement from students at all stages of training. The goal is to initiate and effect curricular changes that enable MSTP students to take optimal advantage of the training and research opportunities at UW-Madison yet complete their degrees in an efficient manner. The committee will identify, prioritize, and address areas of concern identified by students, program administration, and outside reviews, and serve as a forum for students to bring curricular concerns to the program’s attention.
Diversity Committee
This committee advocates for and ensures that issues of diversity (ethnic, racial, life-style, gender, etc.) are appropriately integrated into the MSTP. This goal will be accomplished through on- and off-campus outreach, incorporating diversity into MSTP events, and other initiatives.
Seminars Committee
This committee organizes presentations by MSTP students and faculty. These presentations occur at the weekly Wednesday seminar series, and the spring symposium. The Wednesday seminar series focuses on ethical issues related to biomedical research in alternate years.
Social Committee
The goal of this committee is to improve the sense of community among students in the program. This goal will be accomplished with a fall welcoming event for incoming students prior to beginning Medical School, organization of social events during recruiting weekends, and regular social events such as outdoor musical evenings at Memorial Union Terrace.
