Annual Symposium

The MSTP sponsors a spring symposium featuring an external keynote speaker, oral presentations of student research, student poster presentations, and a student-faculty roundtable. The symposium is organized by the student seminars committee. The keynote speaker is an MD/PhD physician-scientist with an active research program. The speaker is selected by MSTP students with input from the Honors Lecture Committee of the Medical School. This lecture is in honor of Karl Beyer, MD/PhD, an early dual-degree graduate of UW-Madison and pioneer in the development of agents to treat hypertension and edema.

Recent speakers have included:
• Michael Hayden, MD/PhD, University of British Columbia (2000)
• Shawn Coughlin MD/PhD, UCSF (2001)
• Kit Lam, MD/PhD, UC-Davis (2002)
• Christopher Walsh, MD/PhD, Harvard Medical School (2003)
• Evan Sadler, MD/PhD, Washington University (2004)
• Vanessa Gamble, MD/PhD, Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics (2005)
• Jeffrey Friedman, MD/PhD, Rockefeller University (2006)
• Martin Yarmush, MD/PhD, Harvard Medical School (2007)
• Johan Stenflo, MD/PhD, University of Lund (2008)

The 2009 symposium will take place on April 14. The keynote address will be given by George Daley, MD/PhD, Harvard Medical School. Our symposium will be followed the next day by the University’s annual symposium on stem cell biology, in which Dr. Daley also will participate. Please put these dates on your calendar!
