Admissions Procedure
The application process begins with taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and the submission of the standard AMCAS application, with the University of Wisconsin-Madison designated as one of the medical schools to which the AMCAS materials should be sent.
The next step is to complete our online UW MSTP Secondary Application. (Some applicants have heard that they should not contact medical schools requesting that they be sent a secondary application. While this is true for the regular MD program, it does not apply to students interested in applying to our MSTP.....you may submit our MSTP secondary application anytime before our Dec 17th deadline.)
The UW MSTP uses the VirtualEval system if you plan on having your letters of recommendation sent through them. Letters may also be sent directly to the MSTP office. Original transcripts are not required at the time of application. If you are invited for an interview, we will ask for them to be provided prior to your interview. You can save your application and return to it to work on later. However, once you submit it, you will not be able to change any information. After submitting your application you can periodically log in and see when the various materials have been received by our office. When all your secondary materials have been received and your AMCAS application has been verified, you will be informed that your application is complete. It will then be reviewed at the next meeting of the MSTP admissions committee.
By completing our admission requirements, you are also submitting everything that the regular MD Program in the medical school requires. Therefore, you do not need to submit a separate application for the MD Program. We will review your application first. If you are not accepted into the MSTP and wish to be considered for the regular MD Program, your file will be forwarded to the MD admissions office for their review. (There is a box to check on our secondary to indicate this preference.)
The MSTP admissions committee selects prospective students to invite for interviews on the basis of their program applications. Although academic record and MCAT scores are taken into account by the committee when evaluating applications, previous research experience and letters of recommendation are significant factors that are considered.
Interviews take two full days. With the invitation to visit, each candidate is asked to choose 8-10 professors whose research interests them. This can be done by looking through the list of MSTP trainers. However, all faculty at the UW-Madison who have an appointment in a PhD degree granting program in the biosciences are potential MSTP trainers. We encourage interviewees to look for additional research opportunities by going to the Graduate Training Programs page of this web site, select a specific program that interests you and look through their faculty trainers. There should be links to the faculty member's lab web page describing their research.
The first day starts off with a welcoming breakfast followed by meetings with some of the selected trainers, MSTP admissions committee members, students currently in the program, and directors of some of the other special programs offered on the campus.
The second day involves a visit to the UW Hospitals and Clinics and the opportunity to explore the UW campus and Madison with current MSTP students or on your own. The final event of the visit is an informal dinner at the home of one of our directors.
Admission to the MSTP guarantees the applicant a position in the Medical School. Although one may do so, it is not necessary that students apply to the UW Graduate School until they are accepted into the MSTP. The Program will then assist students in applying to the Graduate School. UW graduate departments currently affiliated with the MSTP will accept an applicant's MCAT scores in place of the GRE.
